C&M STAFF WELLBEING HUB

Mindwave were approached by Cheshire and Merseyside Health and Care Partnership to carry out a discovery & alpha phase with NHS staff to establish key themes around health, wellbeing and resilience at work.

DISCOVERY PHASE

The aim was to gather insights on the current problems staff were facing and what conditions were not being met in their work environment. These insights would help shape the new digital support solution to address and improve the situation of these issues.

During Discovery we employed a mixture of qualitative and quantitative methods, These were:

• 3 Jam-board sessions by Innovation Agency which had an attendance of 45 participants
• A follow up typeform survey in which we sent 24 questions and got a response from 57 people
• 10 Remote online discussion events following from the typeform survey results to build upon the insights.

From the qualitative methods of research, we collated what users had to say and identified 7 key themes:

  • Existing support is not fit for purpose.

  • Staff do not feel supported to take a mental health or self-care day.

  • More guidance is needed on shared goals and expectations in relation to absence.

  • A sense of feeling “connected” with colleagues can help to support wellbeing and resilience.

  • Staff can feel unheard - sometimes their own health and wellbeing seem like an afterthought.

  • Resources need to be reliable, useful, accessible and easy to find.

  • Training and awareness are paramount.

Alongside these key themes and insights from the survey, we created a set of user needs and hypotheses.

We broke down the user needs into user stories and acceptance criteria to help us understand what is needed by the user and what we might need to produce to help meet users need. The hypothesis was also broken into two sections - beliefs and assumptions. This was to show what we believe would happen and also the risk we have by holding on to this belief. After creating our user needs and hypothesis, we recommended a set of features for Alpha prototyping and testing prior to beta deployment. To make sure that the prototypes we create were aligned with what users need, we developed a set of KPI’s to assess the performance of the features

ALPHA PHASE

From the alpha features suggested from the Discovery phase, we developed a set of prototype designs and present them to potential users for feedback. From the discussions with the client, we presented a sitemap with all of the features suggested from discovery and agreed upon a set of features to prioritise for the first MVP.

We initially wanted to facilitate a series of workshops however we didn’t get the turn up we had hoped for. Mindwave decided to adapt and sent out a survey to gather insight about the prototypes showcased to them so that participants could give their opinion during a time that suited them.

The feedback given from the workshop and survey helped us to iterate the prototypes for Beta planning. Mindwave also drafted an initial sitemap and userflow.
